The development of new strains of cannabis or the isolation of cannabis with
elevated CBD levels can be a time-consuming and labor intense process.  This is an area where vegetative state potency information can provide a huge advantage to the patient-cultivator/breeder.  With early stage cannabinoid profile information, the breeder can now collapse the time for new CBD-rich strain development or isolation of certain cannabinoid characteristics in a plant down to weeks or months rather than years.

CBD or Cannabidiol is in the same class of compounds as THC called cannabinoids.  The presence of CBD and THC and their ratio to one another in a given cannabis plant is determined by its genetics.  CBD is a non-psychoactive and non-intoxicating cannabinoid that may provide patients with relief from chronic pain due to muscle spasticity, convulsions and inflammation.  It has also been shown to provide patients with relief from feelings of anxiety and may have antibiotic and anti-tumor properties.

The therapeutic and non-intoxicating properties of CBD and the availability of new CBD-rich strains are of particular interest with the rise of the medical cannabis movement.  The techniques we’ll discuss center around the effort to make CBD-rich cannabis widely and consistently available.

In the majority of the CBD-rich cannabis seed stock available today, only 25% of the seeds have the potential to be CBD-rich, i.e. CBD content >4% by weight.  This means, the patient cultivator still has work to do when trying to isolate CBD-rich plants from seed stock.  Techniques are available to test these seedlings in the vegetative state to quickly identify those with CBD-rich characteristics, allowing the patient cultivator to avoid the cloning of all but CBD-rich seedlings and the wait to  test the final flower product for CBD:THC ratios.  Eliminating the effort to maintain clone stock of all of the candidates and having to trace back to the correct clone stock for further propagation.  Using this approach can represent a significant reduction in the time and resources it takes to isolate CBD-rich medication.

In the case of the development of new CBD-rich strains, one can use cannabinoid profile information obtained through vegetative state potency testing of specific parts of the plant to drive strategic selection of both, CBD-rich or CBD-potential, males and females prior to the flowering stage.  This approach allows the patient cultivator to take generations of trial and error out of the breeding process, enabling rapid development of new CBD-rich cannabis strains and seed stock promoting the availability of this important type of cannabis.

I am a breeder who wishes to help with the cause. What parts of the vegetative plant do you specifically test for cannabinoid ratios. I work at Iron labs and wish to test for my self and any other CBD rich strain breeders to be as efficient as possible. We are just trying to save some lives. Thanks.

What great thinking. Once again necessity puts the users into the invention mode.

okay I put that in the wrong spot. I wanted to say kudos on the high cbd attention. From what information I’ve come across it is very good for pain. They probably put in pill form so you don’t have to do bongs every four hours. But really, well done and good luck with your trials.

This is really what I would like to look into when I move from school into a career, anyways I wanted to know if it was possible to breed a canibis strain that had been bred to only produce the cbd?
